      Process

The Children’s School welcomes families from all backgrounds and seeks a student body that reflects the diversity of San Diego. We encourage students with a variety of interests, learning styles, personalities and talents to apply.

Admission to The Children’s School is based on many factors, including, but not limited to:
      • a child’s intellectual development
      • a child's social development
      • his or her parents’ overall commitment to the educational philosophy and well being of the school
We invite you to explore our programs to see what makes a TCS education unique. While we have tried to capture the spirit, depth and breadth of The Children’s School here, there is no substitute for the real thing. We encourage you to visit our six-acre campus in La Jolla to experience our school’s magic for yourself.

I'm ready to apply! What do I do now?

      1. Check the age requirements to see if your child is of age for the grade you are interested in applying for.
      2. Submit a completed application form and $110 non-refundable application fee.
      3. If appropriate, submit the following forms
        • teacher evaluation form, to be completed by your child’s current teacher and returned by him or her to the admissions office
        • request for school transcripts
        • a student questionaire to be completed by the student applicant (2nd - 8th)
        • a parent questionaire to be completed by a parent of the applicant (6th - 8th)
      4. After the application has been received, children will be invited to come to school for a visit in the classroom. This visit will give the TCS faculty the opportunity to assess academic learning levels as well as social and behavioral school readiness. Assessments are part of the admissions process for every child, and are scheduled after the application has been submitted.
        • For younger children, assessments consist of an applicant spending part of a morning in a class with other children of the same age, allowing TCS teachers to observe him or her in a classroom setting and interacting with a group.
        • For elementary children, assessments consist of an applicant spending a morning in a class with other children of the same age, allowing TCS teachers to observe him or her in a classroom setting and interacting with a group.
        • For middle school children, aassessments consist of an applicant spending a day in a class with other children of the same age, allowing TCS teachers to observe him or her in a classroom setting and interacting with a group, as well as reviewing the submitted student questionnaire, progress reports and teacher recommendations.
      5. Teachers and the admissions team make final placement determinations.
      6. After current families sign contracts for the following year, new applicants are notified of acceptance by mail on March 11, 2016. Priority is given to currently enrolled students and siblings of currently enrolled children.
The Children's School does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion or sexual orientation in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial aid or other school-administered programs or activities.
