standardized testing at tcs
Each year, students in grades three and up at The Children's School take the ERB CTP 4 standardized test as an independent evaluation of student progress and as a requirement of our accreditation with the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). The goal of the testing – in conjunction with written progress reports and parent-teacher conferences – is to provide a picture of a student’s academic standing and to assist in planning programs. We firmly believe that test scores give only a partial – albeit important – view into what our students know and can do academically. While we are proud of our scores, we realize that standardized testing is only one measure of student success.
If you’ve read A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink, you know that these tests show what a student’s left brain can do. It does not measure those things we believe are critical in the modern work place including creativity, imagination and empathy. According to recent research, traditional tests of IQ only account for 4 to 10 percent of success in the work place. So while we are always happy to share our test scores, we will continue to focus on educating the whole child and strengthening emotional intelligence.
