The
Children’s School believes in the importance of regular physical activity for all students. Our toddler
and preschool students are given numerous outside play periods in which
they can hop, dig, jump, tricycle or all of the above. Beginning in
prekindergarten, in addition to outside play periods, students participate in regular physical education classes. Classes are taught by experienced physical educators and emphasize physical fitness, motor development and social development.
Physical Fitness
- Students develop physical fitness and strength through games and activities requiring a high degree of movement.
- Children take part in a physical fitness unit in which they learn what fitness means, why it is
important and how to develop physical fitness appropriately.
Motor Development
- Students develop spatial awareness, balance, rhythm, throwing, kicking,
dribbling, catching/fielding, and striking.
- Skills are
taught in isolation, then practiced in games designed to maximize use of that particular skill. The skills are then used in more
conventional games.
- Students master the
individual skills that comprise a particular game, apply these skills
in a more complex game, and experience the joy and confidence of
learning new motor skills.
Social Development
- Through physical
activity and games, students work on building their self confidence and sense of responsibility, honesty, and fairness. They also learn to cooperate and empathize, learn the joy of
movement and develop appropriate physical risk-taking and self-control skills.
- Students
and teachers discuss the attributes necessary when playing sports
games. Students are given both positive and corrective feedback on
their behavior.
- Games are designed to allow all students
to participate throughout the entire activity and to give all students
opportunities to experience success.

TCS also supports physical fitness through:
Outdoor Learning Spaces
- TCS
has several outdoor learning spaces where students can run, climb, play
and explore, including playgrounds, the blacktop, the tree house, and
the Kelly Family Field.
After-School Enrichment Classes
- Through
its relationship with The Dance Academy at The Children’s School,
students have the opportunity to participate in ballet and introductory
dance classes.
- TCS students may participate in Girls on the Run, a national organization that encourages positive self-esteem and physical fitness in girls.
