Admissions Process and Timeline

Note: We are accepting applications for a few spots that remain in some of our classes for the 2010-11 school year.

Fall

  • In the fall preceding a child’s potential enrollment, learn about our school by requesting an admissions packet from the school, or by exploring our web site.
  • After reviewing school materials, contact the admissions office to arrange a date to tour the school. Children are welcome to accompany you on this initial visit. You may also attend one of our Open Houses  to receive an overview of the entire school.
Tour schedule: tours of the toddlers program, preschool and prekindergarten are available on T and Th at 9, 10, or 11 a.m.; elementary and middle years tours are available in the morning.
Fall and Early Winter
  • Download or obtain an application form and, if appropriate, the following forms:
--teacher evaluation form, to be completed by your child’s current teacher and returned by him or her to the admissions office
    --request for school transcripts,
--a student evaluation, to be completed by the student applicant
  • Submit a completed application form, along with a $100 non-refundable application fee, to The Children’s School.
  • After the application has been received, children will be invited to a one-half day assessment (or for the Toddlers program, a visitation). This visit will give the TCS faculty the opportunity to assess academic learning levels as well as social and behavorial school readiness.
  • Toddler visitations are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Visits are 30 minutes long. Parents and toddlers attend together in small groups with the toddler teachers, parent educator and other interested families. The visitation is a time for the faculty and families to meet, ask questions and determine whether or not our parent participation program is a good fit for each indiviual family. Toddler visitations are scheduled after the application has been completed.
  • Preschool assessments consist of preschool children spending one hour in the classroom interacting with the teachers and fellow applicants. Our faculty assesses children for social, emotional, behavioral and cognitive school readiness.
  • Students applying for fifth through eighth grade are required to take the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) test. Click here for a list of test dates and locations .
  • After every child has had the opportunity to visit the classroom and be assessed, teachers will make final placement determinations.
Spring
  • After current families sign contracts for the following year and the number of new openings is known, applicants who have been accepted for the following year are notified by mail. Priority is given to currently enrolled students and siblings of currently enrolled children. Please note: the entire admissions process must be completed before notification will occur.
