Summer 2009 Update
The information that comes back to us from our former students who are
now in middle school, high school and beyond tells us that the
educational philosophy at The Children's School and our teaching
methodologies nurture a growth mindset. Francis Parker School
offers Dynamic Individual Achievement (DIA) awards for middle school
students whose classroom contributions enrich the courses of study of
all members of their classes. This year Stanley G. (TCS 2007) won
the DIA for English as well as an award pin as top student in eighth
grade drama. Bryce M. (TCS 2008) earned a DIA in beginning
Mandarin. In addition, Bryce programs weekly with the Upper School
computer teacher and will be taking an Upper School computer class this
summer as a rising eighth grader. Niku S. (TCS 2008) earned a DIA
in beginning Spanish. Niku sent me an email that said in part, “TCS had
created in me a passion for learning. The guide to getting an award at
Francis Parker isn’t easy. Throughout the school year the teacher
notices if you ask questions, are good in technology, work as a team,
have a passion for the subject and go beyond her expectations. Can you
believe we actually made a soap opera in Spanish and you can check it
out on Youtube.com by searching for Ping Pong Fiasco.
I edited the movie with effects and titles.” Yes, Niku I can believe
it. I remember the web page you created on Ancient Mesopotamia when you
were a sixth grader at TCS.
Corinne and Shelby S. (TCS 2006 and 2008) are students at The Grauer School.
Corinne completed over 100 hours of community service this past year,
with more than 60 of those hours at the Helen Woodward Animal Center.
Shelby received a school award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, and
she was recently chosen by the San Diego Children’s Choir to sing the
national anthem at a Padre’s game.
At The Bishop’s School,
Alexa B. (TCS 2007) won the Leslie Sissman Evans Award given to the
middle school student who, while excelling in scholarship and
co-curricular activities, most clearly demonstrated the qualities of
good citizenship and concern for others. Alexa also won the middle
school award for achievement in Spanish. Natesa H. (TCS 2007)
won the middle school award for achievement in dance. Both girls, who
have been on the honor roll every semester since matriculating at
Bishop’s, have been active in after school sports and drama productions.
